bad 7.62x54r ammo
I ordered some 182 grain bulgarian ammo from ammunition to go. Its bad don't buy it. I think its off their website now anyway. Anybody else get any?
I called customer service and the lady I need to talk to is off till monday. I have bought quit a bit of stuff from them over the last few years with no problems. I will update you guys with the answer I get. The cases are cracked, bullets unseated and covered in corrosion. I pulled out 3 bullets trying to chamber and unchamber a round. Gunpowder everywhere. I bought some russian on the same order and it looks great. Just a heads up if they put it back on the website. |
Re: bad 7.62x54r ammo
was it like that inside a tin ?
|
Re: bad 7.62x54r ammo
yes. I have only opened 1 tin of 6 and its the worst ammo I have ever seen. I have bought lots of surplus over the years and this is horrible.

The tin has a small hole in it. The other ammo looks good. I guess I should open them all now. Not what I really want to do.
First tin on right second one on left |
Re: bad 7.62x54r ammo
Two things I would like to predict:
One: Ammo to Go will refund your money for the defective product PROMPTLY. Two: The other INTACT cans will contain good clean serviceable cartridges. do please keep us posted. |

Yes please keep us posted ........ this is a nightmare senario......buying something and the day you need it is screwed up. I pray it was that hole and it was kept in a warm enviroment is what did the damage to that specific case. Fingers crossed........ thanks for the MAJOR heads up. T |

Aieeeee......gee I'd NEVER put anything that looks like that out of the box into my rifle.

Re: bad 7.62x54r ammo
A perfect example of why I check EACH & EVERY round I have in my possession when I first obtain it.
Also an example of why I won't buy "foreign surplus," especially sight-unseen. There are indeed rounds which are worse than having no rounds at all. |
Re: bad 7.62x54r ammo
I just noticed that Centerfire Systems jacked up the price on their 7.62X54R spam cans. A week ago the 440 round tins were $79.99 plus shipping. Now they are $109.99 plus shipping. Wow! 40% more, just like that. I think J&G has the best price right now.

Re: bad 7.62x54r ammo
I bought some old Soviet stuff a few years back, it was for machine guns. many cases were dinged and some wouldnt even feed in the Nagant let alone the SVT-40.I stay away from that old Warsaw pact ammo.

For example if I wanted to buy some and I find out it Milsurp from the 80s will that raise a instant red flag??? T |

The Albanian that I had worked just fine in my rifles, but I could see dinged case mouths & varying thicknesses on the rims. If you were trying to use this stuff in a rifle with a tight chamber/tight headspace (i.e. Finnish Mosin Nagant 39), it could cause some problems. Czech light ball 7.62x54R ammo in a lacquered steel case is said to be great ammo, but the lacquer will sometimes melt in a hot rifle & cause difficult extraction. Again, this isn't a problem in all rifles, but can make shooting it a real "joy" if you have a rifle that doesn't like it. Polishing the chamber with a brush & brake cleaner (to remove lacquer deposits) may help in this case. |
Re: bad 7.62x54r ammo
After talking with the folks at ammunition to go they have refunded my money for the bad tin of ammo. Took a few days to get a response but they did the right thing.
I am out shipping but in their defense they can't inspect every tin of 30 year old ammo. |

Yes, they are fine. I shot some this last weekend. Only thing is the primers are getting blown out on each round after you fire. Fairly accurate stuff though. Cheaper than shooting 308. |

Never heard of primers coming out before...

- low pressure loads (not likely with mil-surplus ammo) - excessive headspace NOOB - have you checked the headspace on your rifle? |

No, Just got it last week and shot it this last weekend. A mosin 28-76 target model. What do I need to check the headspace? |
Re: bad 7.62x54r ammo
I just looked up headspace gauges. Anyone ever use the "coin" type. Seems easier because you don't have to remove firing pin or extractor.

I've never used a coin type gauge. I modified my no-go gauge like in the attached picture (ground off a wee bit of the rim to clear the extractor). Of all my Mosin Nagant rifles, only ONE (an old Russian MN91) has failed headspace. |
Re: bad 7.62x54r ammo
I just put a caliper on the ammo and it is a little longer 'due to the heavier bullet?' than a 147 grain russian and a 140 something czech. The russian didn't pop primers but the bulgarian did. Crap ammo maybe?

Re: bad 7.62x54r ammo
The Bulgarian heavy ball is known to have bad lots:

Re: bad 7.62x54r ammo
I have the 10 over 54 headstamp. Known to blow primers after posting on gunboards. Thanks for the mosin link.

Re: bad 7.62x54r ammo
I should rephrase my comment, "I try and stay away from old Warsaw pact stuff" I mean I stay away from sealed tins. I like to get "loose" ammo so i can inspect it. thats all,the batch i was speaking of i got was horrid, and it was Russian,I do avoid Balkan ammunition except for Serbian. I just dont trust it.
